One of the most important items in your kit will be food and water. To be sure you have enough water, think of it like this: 1 gallon per person per day. The water is not only for drinking but for sanitation during an emergency.

Food will have to be non-perishable packaged or canned items. Make sure to cover special dietary restrictions or baby food if needed. There should be enough food to last each person for at least 7 days.

To pair with food, pack a non-electrical can opener, utensils and paper plates.

A well-equipped First-Aid kit is always essential, but especially during a hurricane emergency. The First-Aid kit should carry Band-Aids, Neosporin, scissors, tweezers, disinfectant wipes, pre-moist towelettes and more. Along with a First-Aid kit, remember prescription medication and medical devices.

The chance of your power being impacted by wind and flooding is likely during a storm. Each member of your family should have at least one flashlight. Stockpile extra batteries not only for the flashlights, but also for any other battery powered items such as fans.

In a water-proof container place any important documents, medical records, banking information, insurance cards, extra house and car keys and enough cash to last 7 days if needed.

It is important to remember that if you are evacuating, your pets need to as well. For pet care, pack at least 7 days worth of pet food and water. Do not forget any medication, identification, a carrier and muzzle if needed.

And of course, if you are evacuating from your home, have rain gear such as raincoats, boots, and umbrellas in your hurricane kit. You may also want to place sturdy gloves and shoes in the kit too.
