We and you consider things like umbrellas, blankets, beds to be very common things, but even today, for many people, it is not less than a luxury facility. Mumbai-based Vimal Cherangattu also came to know about this from a personal experience in his life in the year 2018, when he thought of working on it instead of just feeling sorry or sad.

However, giving or helping someone in need may not make a big difference in society. But this can definitely reduce some difficulties in the life of a needy and with this thinking, Vimal is working.

For four years, he collects donations from people through a Facebook page called The Cover Project, so that he can help the millions of people living on the streets of Mumbai in some way. He started this work by asking people to collect their broken or old umbrellas. He is reaching out to the needy by getting the broken umbrellas collected from the people repaired for the last four years.

Speaking to The Better India, Vimal said, “I do not run any NGO. I just raise funds and things through my social media pages and pass it on to those who need it. I started by just collecting and distributing umbrellas but we are also providing items like bedding and medicines to the people free of cost.”

Vimal works in an IT company as marketing. They probably had no idea of the problems faced by the people living on the street until a few years ago. But he says that even a small incident in life can sometimes bring big changes. The same thing happened with Vimal too.

Once while traveling in Mumbai, a small girl selling flowers on the road came to him and started asking him for an umbrella. It was rainy season, so Vimal had an umbrella. At first Vimal wondered why this girl was asking for an umbrella, but they gave her the umbrella without thinking much, after which the girl became very happy.

Seeing that little girl that day, Vimal felt that this umbrella was like a luxury item for them, which she was so happy to get. Seeing him many more children came to him and started asking for umbrella.

Actually, these people living on the street buy food and eat from what they earn throughout the day. If they have even 100 rupees deposited, hardly anyone will think of buying an umbrella. But most of us keep more than one umbrella in our house and sometimes we even throw away the old umbrella considering it useless.

In such a situation, Vimal told his friends about this and talked to people about this problem through Facebook. He appealed to the people to donate their old or broken umbrella for the needy people. Vimal says, “That post of mine became quite viral. Many big celebrities of the city also shared my post, after which in the very first year we collected 5000 umbrellas and distributed them to the needy people.

After accumulating so many umbrellas in the very first year, Vimal thought that perhaps everyone living on the streets of Mumbai would get umbrellas, but it did not happen. Because the number of umbrellas he had, the needy were far more.

Many people would ask Vimal that poverty cannot be removed by giving an umbrella? But at that time Vimal remembers the words of a child living on the street. He explains, “While distributing umbrellas in 2018, I asked a child how do you go to school on rainy days, to which he replied – by running. That’s when I thought that every year I would try that no child has to go to school running after getting wet.

From the year 2018 till now, he does an umbrella campaign every year in the rain, for which people help him with his broken umbrella with money. At the same time, he also collects funds online for things like bedding and medicines. In this work, many friends of his office, school, college support him. Vimal said that not only from all over the country, but also from abroad people have come forward to help him through social media.

Recently, he came to know about a company in which blind people are making umbrellas. Now he is going to buy umbrellas made of these blind people and distribute them among the needy people. You can also contact Vimal and his team on Facebook to help in any way.
