Visiting Canada’s first railway tunnel is a free event that starts near the St. Lawrence River and takes you to the downtown core. You’ll experience a beautiful rainbow display underneath the city as you follow the path of the enhanced tunnel.

The moving light path regularly shifts from brightly colored hues such as blue, orange, red, purple, and green. On special holidays the tunnel is lit up in specific colors. It will be red on Canada Day and orange on National Aboriginal Day, for example. Musical sounds will embody you as you wander through the spectacular display, helping to captivate you at the moment. Sporadically, you’ll even hear the sound of a train whistle and engine as it passes by above you. It’ll feel like a secret underground of dreams!

The Brockville Railway Tunnel was dug out from 1854 to 1860, and it stretches about a third of a mile beneath downtown Brockville. Its age is evident in its drippy, mineral-crusted curved stone walls and limited walking space - as it was built for other purposes than entertaining those who walked through. Passing through the tunnel must have been a claustrophobic nightmare for anyone aboard the trains that barely slipped through.

However, in the 1970s the train system was shut down. Afterward, the tunnel was boarded up and abandoned for a lost moment in time until 2017, when Brockton built parks at both ends and reopened the tunnel as a subterranean walking trail, with the added lights and music. Much to everyone's surprise, the Railway Tunnel quickly became quite successful. It is one of the top tourist attractions in Ontario.

It’s important to note, that while this is a highlighted spot to experience, it remains a pedestrian-only walking path that excludes the use of bicycles, scooters, roller skates, or skateboards.

The entire length of the tunnel is approximately 1,722 feet and its installed Color Kinetics ColorGraze MX4 Power Core luminaries through the entire path. This ultimately transforms a normal underground rail pathway into a visually aesthetic walkway connecting the north and south portals.

Grazing luminaries were specifically chosen for the inside of the railway in order to show off the unique architectural and geographical elements of the 155-year-old tunnel. While ColorBlast Power Core MX4 was placed strategically at both portals to coax in locals and tourists alike. People can even request custom light shows for events held on the waterfront.

The Brockville Railway Tunnel was reopened to the public in August 2017, to coincide with the Canada 150 celebrations taking place across the Great White North that year. Since this already proves to be a plentiful breeding ground for tourist activities in the summer months, the newly restored Brockville Railway Tunnel serves as a perfect magical gateway between the important sections of downtown Ontario.

The city has spent many years revitalizing its downtown area and modernizing pockets of the past. It's now filled with public parks and walking trails have all been enhanced as have the museums and hundreds of historical period buildings. Though none quite like the Brockville Railway Tunnel.

The railway tunnel will be open daily from 9 am until 9 pm starting April 2022, through the summer until Thanksgiving Monday. A tunnel experience is a free event for all to visit, though there is a spot by the entrances for donations to help keep the lights and music going. This long exciting stretch also has wheelchair access at both entrances, inviting everyone to be a part of the wonderful show. The tunnel is fully monitored with panic buttons, automatic emergency lighting and ventilation, and Wi-Fi and cell phone service throughout. Wear decent walking shoes and have a poncho or hat handy. The tunnel can get a little drippy at times, but don’t worry: the water is clean and safe, and can actually add to the adventure!
