EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Harrison High School graduates ended their year with a commencement ceremony that won’t be soon forgotten.

As dark clouds moved over Harrison’s football field Wednesday night, parents and teachers readied their umbrellas from the stands.

But the teenagers awaiting their degrees didn’t have that same luxury as winds picked up and heavy rain started to fall. A video posted to Facebook by Harrison AP History teacher Chad Festcher captured the moment the downpour began.

“We only have like 180 more (names) to go, so we’re just about there,” Festcher jokes in the video.

In the background, fellow teacher Chad Cain is heard quickly announcing the names of more than 200 students as they rush across the stage.

As of Thursday morning, the video had almost 10,000 views.

“We had hoped to get (the ceremony) in before the rain started, but time and the weather weren't on our side. I brought an umbrella and a rain jacket and thought it would be a perspective that many folks may not have had, and grabbed my phone and did a 30-second video,” said Festcher.

Though the rain only lasted about 10 minutes, it was long enough to soak the students and drench their mortar boards.

But, according to Festcher, they didn’t seem to mind.

“They were laughing and smiling and just made the best of it. … My favorite part is when warped and soggy mortar boards went flying high into the air,” he said.

“It was a special moment and caught in my chest a little bit.”
